As far as guns i usually carry a .22 magnum pistol but since you cant buy one a .22 mag lever rifle would work. I guide in the spring so i have put a "handle" on a few of my dogs. Meaning I can call them off a bayed hog for the shot. Or back them up by voice command. Though this is effective i still prefer a catchdog. Whatever caliber you choose keep in mind that you want something lightweight, durable, and short so as you can maneuver it in thick brush.
