Sounds like you may have been a little too close to the roost. I'd try setting up before light a bit further away, preferably in the direction he's been flying down. If you call to him at all while he's on the roost, just give him a single series of soft tree yelps to let him know you're there then shut up. Hit him with some soft calls when he hits the ground. Don't call every time he gobbles, he may hang up and wait for you (the hen) to come to him. Play hard to get. Make him come looking for you. Good luck!
