Busted one this am! It has been a very tough season here. The drought on Big Island (since Nov) affected the turkeys and other game birds. The toms just started gobbling on Tues am, where I hunt. Many flocks are still all hens or toms. All month since Mar 1st has been slower than slow.
Anyways, I busted a slim 2yo who came in hot and loud.(pix coming)
14.5lb, 6.875" beard, l spur .875", r spur .500
I hunted for 6 days, hard. I blew a tom off the roost by getting too close and was heart fallen. Then switched to plan B. I'd seen this guy strut and drum, but not gobble when "big daddy" was hollering away up the hill. I snuck near big daddy's strut zone, but he changed roost trees and I blew it. Plan B Bird came to a glass call and I have to say the real hen 30 yds uphill helped. I shot him at 46yds with some Rem.wingmaster HD #6.
