Save the bears group suing N.J. wildlife council
Thursday, March 11, 2010 THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

TRENTON — A group opposed to killing bears says it is suing the New Jersey Fish and Game Council, two days after the council voted to authorize the state's first black bear hunt in five years.

The Bear Education and Resource Group claims the council violated the Open Public Meeting Act, which requires the council to allow members of the public to attend its meetings.

In a statement Thursday, BEAR alleges members of the council participated in a private meeting of the game committee, which decides on the bear hunt policy.

Len Wolgast, chairman of the game committee, says all the council's regular meetings are open, but subcommittee meetings, including the game committee, don't have to be.

The state environmental commissioner still must approve the bear hunt.
