Every guide that I have ever got info from have told me 270/30-06 class rifle. I would use the 270/280 as my minimum rifle cartridge. I have used the Contender in 35 Remington and 44 Magnum as well as the 50 cal Muzzle loader. Many use a 243 but I wouldn't. If I were buying a new rifle for a elk hunt, The 300 Win Mag would be my choice. I would not hesitate to use my 308 with the 190 grain Hornady BTSP.

I have passed down most of my guns to the younger bunch, I kept the 250 Savage, my wife's favorite deer rifle and my 308 and 45-70 for big game. I feel well armed.
