I've got two 500 foremans and they've got two oil coolers one high and one in front of the fan. The reason they did this was because the cooler in front of the fan can get clogged easily in muddy conditions.
i agree, check the cooler and fan first. Honda uses a relay to switch on the fan, and they are known for going out. but if the fan comes on and the cooler is clean. then i would suspect the filter.
