My wife shoots a Beretta AL 390 12 gauge that we bought used and had the stock cut down to fit her. She loves it - as it is very light for a semi. When we pattern the gun, I feed it 2 3/4 inch shells but slip in the 3 inch mags when she hunts. She never notices the recoil when there is a gobbler in front of her.
As in all things there are trade-offs. Pump guns cost less and are lighter but kick more. Semi's are heavier, cost more and kick less.
Getting a gun that fits her is very important as is a good cushy recoil pad.
