Default Meat thermometers

I want to get a meat thermometer, and was wondering if I should get one that has a wire on it so that the gauge/reading would be on the outside of the grill/smoker/oven. That way I wouldn't have to open the grill to see the temp. Also, how accurate are the gauges on most grills. Would it be beneficial to also get one for the inside grill temp? Last question, can you get a decent thermometer without spending much? I want to put this on my Christmas list, but only if it is not to much $$$ If it is, I'll just get one myself out of my hunting money :^) Thanks
