The 35 Whelen is simply a 30-06 case necked up to accept 35 caliber bullets. It makes a fantastic big game cartridge. It will fire a 225 grain bullet at about 2700 fps and a 250 grain bullet at about 2600 fps. Remington, Federal, Nosler custom, and Double Tap load for the Whelen.
The 35 Remington is a semi rimmed bottle necked cartridge designed to be shot in lever action rifles like the Marlin 336. It is loaded relatively weak from most of the manufactures and will generally fire a 200 grain bullet at about 2050 fps. But if you look at smaller specialized companies like Buffalo bore you can find that they load a 220 grain bullet at 2200 fps. which turns the anemic 35 Remington into a real big game cartridge. It is a short to medium range big game rifle and with the right loads makes a fantastic "deep woods" elk and moose rifle. Manufacturers that load for the 35 Remington include Buffalo Bore, Federal, Hornady, Remington and Winchester. Though you will prefer the Hornady and Buffalo Bore loads for real performance from this cartridge.
Remington no longer chambers the Whelen in the 7600 so you will have to find one used if you want one... though they do chamber it in the semi auto model 750 and their model 700. Ruger also chambers it in their M77 Hawkeye.
