Yes it can be done but not real sure why you would want to? Trade the 26inch barrel in for a shorter one would be your best bet. I have a 26in 11/87 and it swings and handles very well. You will suffer with accuracy and down range patterning as well with the shorter barrel unless you try different than standard chokea and your shot size will have to be larger to do the same thing a longer barrel and smaller size shot can do. Just my 2 cents
