The only other practical consideration with the Mosin Nagant is that the iron sights aren't that great, and most have straight bolt handles, making the mounting of optics somewhat more problematic. If you can shoot with the iron sights at reasonable ranges, the 7.62x54R can do the job. The power level is right between the 308 Winchester and the 30-06, both excellent big game cartridges. Wolf makes expanding soft point ammo, as does Prvi Partisan for sure.
