First of all Thanks Everyone!!!
My sub had just gotten out of the hospital for an issue with a gastric by-pass operation about 4 weeks ago. He almost died from that mess, and looks like hell..
I had tried calling first thing after we first got there and the wind was picking up. I didn't think one would respond to it all. After around 15 minutes we took a short ride to the end of the road. (about a mile) We then drove back to where I was calling and saw what we thought was a big cow. It was within easy range for my bow at that time. But due to all the leaves we couldn't see any antlers at all. So I kept moving the truck back and forth calling thinking a bull would be coming out if that was a cow. After he got a ways away we noticed the small antlers. That when he stated what our agreement was so I told him to shoot it. Because by then it was around the 65 yards away..
The shot was low on the forward quarter with a 30-06 using 150 grain bullet. No lung or heart hit. The no lung or heart hit still has me puzzled even today. I am thinking he had cut the artery to the heart with that shot.
Due to using the 150 grain bullet it left us no blood trail to follow. But the size of his tracks made it quite easy. You could see where he strungled going through some rasberry bushes and I looked over to the left and there he was.
We then had to get 2 chains and a come-a-long and drag him to where I could dress it out.
The rest was a lot of work getting him out far enough to hook ropes up to the moose and truck so the we could pull it out. We pulled it out to a bank and come-a-longed it to the truck. I only wished I had taken a couple of picks of all that rope hooked up and running threw the woods to the moose. Trying to get it to slide around trees and the like was a real pain. So anyone handleing one of these had better be prepaired for the work it invoves..
