Though I haven't killed an elk with a 243 I believe that when using a good bonded bullet in 100gr and up it will kill an elk just as quick as a 7 mag when shot broadside to quartering away in the heart lung area. It doesn't possess the range of the 7 mag but it can do the job within its own limitations.
