RE: GPS useage
If I may, I would like to interject here.
I have personally never had very good experiences with down loaded or any sort of home computer generated maps. The scale, scope and detail are just not there.
I use USGS 1:24,000 scale maps. They are UTM grid, 1927 NAD(conus). They cost about four dollars a piece.
They are fairly large, but easyly folded and available throughout the United States. It only requires a little research on the users part to locate them.
With that said, as far as the grid format and datum is concerned, as long as you have the right protractor, it' s hard to say if one is better than the other. But most folks seem to be more comfortable with the UTM/UPS format. For one, there are less numbers to worry about AND most forest service maps are that way anyway.
