It used to be that if you said you had a 300 it was understood it meant a 300 Savage, that was quite a few years ago though. I would not put it in the same class as a 270 or 06. It is 30 cal bullets, factory loadings can be found in 150 to 180 gr. if you can find them. This has not been a popular cartridge for quite some time now. It is however a sweet shooting light recoiling cartridge that is about 150-200fps slower than the 308/06. With ammo availability what it has been recently this may be a handload only option due to limited availability of factory ammo. Currently Midway lists only four factory loadings available, two from Federal 150 and 180 gr and one each from Remington and Winchester both 150 gr. If your not a handloader or don't wish to be one I would pass.
