Soft Lure Floating issues
I have numerous colors of the same brand lure, and numerous pouches of all those colors. Some colors would produce good and others, of very similar appearance, wouldnt even get half the hits. I was a little confused but never gave it much thought until recently. When fishing the different colors, I noticed something peculiar.
By having atleast 2-3 bags of each color that I like, within the same brand and type of lure, I have a pretty good base to work with for comparitive analysis. One of thepeculiararities thatI noticed is that for some reason, a certain color lure wouldfloat while the others would sink. None of these lures are supposed to float, but this certain colorwould while others do not. It didn't matter what bagI would pull the specificcolor from, that certain color always floats.
Also, one of the other colors of this lure will stay at what ever depthI am reeling it through. IfI hold the rod tip high, it will come across the top, but if I hold the rod low it will float about 6 inches under the surface of the water. IfI stop reeling, it will stay whereverI left it, atleast elevation wise. Another anomoly<sp?> for a lure that was supposed to sink.
So basically two of the colors thatI have handle completely different than the other colors of this lure. it doesnt matter what pouche I pull these colors out of, they all handle the same. One will always float to the top, the other will stay at whatever depth you are fishing in the top layer of water, and all the other colors sink like they should.
Obviously, the two colors that dont sink like the others are less dense. The only conclusion that I can come to is that the materials are composed of slightly different polymers, or the amount of glitter that is put into one color is different from another causing a change in densities as well. Knowing that any substrate put into a material will change the composition and density, I still wouldn't think thatthe glitteror dye wouldcause that much of a change in density.
Anyways, after noticing the difference in handling between the lure colors, I was able to change my retrieve to get the action that I wanted and was able to get more bites off the colors that wouldnt produce for me in the past. Now, I still dont get as many hits as my go-to colors, but i definately get more than i used to, and it was because i was ableadjust my fishing style to these certain colors so that they handled like I wanted them to.
So, any of you using rubber lures that aren't getting results with certain colors, check to make sure that it isn't the action of the lure as a result of the density of the material that is causing the problem. Who knows, you may have a killer color combo that the fish would go after if the lure was actually doing what you thought it was doing.
Best of luck fishing guys!
