Default Rod Action and Rod Power Defined

I was confused about rods for the longest time and didnt know whathow to distinguish between the various types of rods and the actions/power that they have. The terms confused me and so I would get turned around and wind up spending an hour in a fishing rod section and have no clue what I was looking at or if a rod I was looking as fit my style of fishing. Because of this, I believe that there might be some confusion pertaining to this topic and so I thought it might be nice to have some clarification on the subject matter.

Action and Power
Action and power, when used in connection with fishing rods, are often misused.

Action is simply put, the way a rod or blank bends. This is described by four different terms:

Extra Fast: Flex in the upper 1/4 of the rod blank.
Fast: Flex in the upper 1/3 of the rod blank.
Moderate: Flex in the upper 1/2 of the rod blank.
Slow: Flex is from the lower 1/3 of the rod blank.

Power is best described as the amount of energy or force that is needed to make a rod blank bend. Some rod manufacturers usethe following power ratings to rate its rods.

Power Rating

Power 1
Ultralight

Power 2
Light

Power 3
Medium Light

Power 4
Medium

Power 5
Medium Heavy

Power 6
Heavy

Power 7
Extra Heavy

Hope this information has been somewhat helpful to anybody that might be somewhat confused with all the fishing rod lingo that gets tossed around.

Best of luck fishing everybody!
