Default Hens coming into season late or early?

Opening morning I heard about 15-20 differant turkeys gobble and saw 6 turkeys (5 being toms and 1 jake). None of which were close.
But that past few weekends I haven't heard even one turkey gobble and only saw 3 turkeys (that I saw in a cornfield when I was moving my blind). I haven't seen a tom even strut this year.
Every tom or jake that I saw wasn't with a hen. There wasn't a hen anywhere close.

Im not sure if this is true or not but there was a rumor going around the iowa county area of the hens either came into the mating season (rut... not sure what its called for turkeys) early or if they are coming in late. Im not sure which one it is, but it seems like it can be the reason for not hearing or seeing any thing.

What do you all think?
