Downed Doe[/b]
It was Sunday, October 12, 2008. I remember it like it was last week. It was the weekend of the Youth Hunt in Wisconsin. I had been dreaming for this all my life.
The Friday before, my brothers, my dad, and I went to the woods to scout and to see where to set up. On the hill in a hay field their was a pretty nice size buck. Then we went to my grandparent’s farm and got our stuff ready for the next day. We had to change the bird shot barrel to a slug barrel on my shotgun.
That night I could barely sleep I lay in bed so excited. I finally fell asleep at midnight. I woke up in the morning twenty minutes before my alarm was to go off. I got out of bed and went down stairs and my dad wasn’t up yet! But I woke him up turning on the lights. We weren’t in a hurry to go because we only had to go two miles.
It was Saturday, October 11, 2008 in the morning my dad and I saw three fawns and heard a buck snorting and stomping behind us. That night we saw three doe and two fawns on the other side of the creek.
Sunday, October 12, 2008 in the morning we saw nothing at all. Sense all the deer we saw the night before were on the other side of the creek, my dad and I moved the tent over there. When we went out that night as I was loading my gun my dad said,” Unload the gun and get back in the truck.” I said “why.” When I got in the truck he said “My driver’s front side tire is flat, so I don’t want to sit out in the cut corn field.” So we went back to my grandparent’s farm and get my grandpa’s truck and came back out. After moving the tent I had a feeling I was going to see something.
Then the really hard part started the waiting we had to wait for the deer to start moving from their bedding. Now that’s why they call it hunting and not shooting because there is a lot of waiting and little shooting. We had talked about all the things my dad had done hunting before my time. When it got close to their moving time my dad said to stop talking or we won’t see any thing so I stopped talking. A little later two fawns came around the creek. About thirty minutes later something jumped into the neighbors standing cornfield. I thought it was something bigger than a deer! I thought it was an elk or a cow that has escaped from a farm. The fawns looked at the creek. There she was!
My dad said “push the safety off” but I said “no” because it was tough and noisy and I didn’t want to scare away the deer. She started to eat so my dad said “take it” I fired and missed. She ran a good 30 yards and started eating again. My dad said “take it.” I shot and missed. She ran another 40 yards. It stopped my dad said “take it” I shot and missed. Then it went another 50 yards looked at me. I heard “take it,” I shot, another miss! She ran another 15 yards left. She stopped again he said “take it” “WAIT, WAIT, WAIT” one of the fawns ran behind her and a car was on the road 250 yards out which was the responsible thing. “Take it” my dad said I shot and miss. The other fawn jumped. The doe ran a little right. As I struggled to load the gun the doe walked a little more. It stopped “take it” he said. I shot and missed it. It ran a good 10 yards right. I saw that I was shooting high so I figured I should aim low. It stopped, and I heard “take it”. I aimed just below the stomach. I shot, and she dropped. As I gave my dad a high five I heard a MAAAAAAAAAAA! I gave my dad a funny look he said “That’s your deer” laughing. On my last shot my thumb came back and cut my nose open.
It was the weirdest thing, the two fawns and the other doe stood on the wooded edge looking at us until we got to the dead deer. As I got closer I thought, “Wow their she is, my first deer.” When we were tagging it I saw the other three deer lurking around in the woods. I hit her in the spin in the neck. When we got back my brother went crazy! My grandma was so proud of me. I was so happy I didn’t know how to react.
