RE: want to start
The bare-bones essentials:
Something to kill the animal with
Somewhere to kill the animal
Legal ability to kill the animal
In other words, get a gun, learn how to use it extremely well, then find a place you can legally hunt. That means hunter safety courses for most people, then buying a license. Make sure you get the additional stamps and other things if you' re hunting WMAs, or for ducks, or with a muzzleloader...
Beyond that:
-Scout the area you' re hunting
-Set up a stand (get treestand/blind)
-Get to the stand in the dark (flashlight, fluorescent tape, good boots)
-Get into your stand (safety harness)
-Stay there, very still, silent, and invisible, for a long time (camouflage, handwarmers, seat cushion, snack)
-See the animal (binoculars, rifle scope)
-Shoot the animal (rifle, ammunition)
-Find the animal (flashlight, property visitation rights for surrounding territory)
-Take the animal with you (rope, dragging sled, or cart)
-Tag the animal
-Transport the animal (pickup, or some way to keep your back seat clean)
-Clean the animal (winch, knives, bucket for entrails, saw for head removal/bone separation, good cleaning book)
-Make the animal into meat (knives, running water, good butchering book)
-Preserve meat (plastic wrap, freezer paper, and a good deep-freeze)
-EAT (good wild game recipe book, ingredients, hungry belly)
-REPEAT
