He gets away with it due to the tunability of the bow. The sight windows on olympic style recurves, are typically cut way past center; much like a compound. With the use of a cushion plunger, one can tune extremely stiff arrows for draw weight by adjusting center shot and adjusting spring stiffness in the plunger. Several years ago, before I got in to 3D, I use to shoot an indoor league in Nashville. My indoor bow was a FITA rig pulling 40#. Using an adjustable cavalier plunger and a simple magnetic flipper rest, I was able to tune a 2020. The total arrow weight put my point on just under the bull at 20 yards with my anchor point.
Figured you would know. Thanks for the info. Guess thats why I black widows generally need stiffer than normal too. Thier window even off the shelf is cut past center.
Yep, a bow cut past center will tolerate a stiffer arrow spine than one cut to center or one cut a little out of center. The good thing about a bow cut past center is that you can always adjust the strike plate thickness a little depending on what arrow spine you're trying to tune. If the arrows too weak, build it out a little. If it's too stiff, you can try a thinner strike plate material, if possible.
