3 in 4 but now have more questions
First year hunting for Turkeys & I got 3 Toms in 4 days of hunting,
Let me say thanks guys for all your valuable info here on the forum. With your help I learned just enough to know how to get started in to Turkey hunting. But now after hunting for them I have more questions & have a lot more to learn.
It all started a week before the Turkey season was to start & my daughter & I spent a day putting new saw dust in my 36 Wood Duck boxes & I said lets go look for some Turkeys the next day. I’ve hunted birds for 35 years & use a bow for deer but had never hunted Turkeys. We went scouting on some public land where I had heard Turkeys during some duck hunts. Well we saw & heard lots of birds in different areas & that was when I decided to try for a Turkey. That is when I came to the forum to start my learning curve.
A run to Bass Pro for hevi-13, calls, decoys, etc. I shot some paper to know aiming point & patterning. Did another day of scouting & blind building & picked a spot I’d seen birds fly down to & Toms doing lots of strutting.
Opening day has me in my spot & 15 minutes in to shoot time a big Tom comes running to the decoys. Bang & I’m all smiles. Called in 3 more Toms to learn what I could too. Tom had a 9 ¼ inch beard & went 21 ½ lbs.
Day 2 has me moving to another spot & had a group of 4 Toms come in to the decoys & were about 12 yards out, I did not level out the rib & shot right over Mr. Tom’s head. %$#@Dam…….
Day 3 has me running & gunning again & setting up on gobbling Toms. I call two Toms strutting up to the decoys & I get bird number 2. He had a 9 inch beard & went 19 ¼ lbs.
Day 4 has me in the same blind as day 3. I have some hens & rabbits walk through the decoys but all the Toms are back dooring me & just not coming to the decoys. ( got to learn how to call a lot better) Finally at 2pm I get a Tom in to my shooting lane & bird number 3 goes down. He had a 3 inch beard & went 16 ½ lbs.
I was thinking this year was going to be a year of learning & getting near some birds to learn what I could. I put in lots of hard work & good woodsman ship but I never thought I’d get so lucky as to get 3 birds.
Thanks again for all the tips & know how. I’ll be back with questions I came up with as I sat in the woods.
