Default RE: Clear or Raspy?

Depends on the day and the mood of the birds. I generally have 1 slate, 2 boxes and 6-8 different mouth calls every time I go out. I let the birds tell me what the flavor of the day is. Several days I've found that of all the calls I try the birds will only respond to 1 of them. Some days you can just about holler come here and they come in. Be versatile and don't get stuck in a this is the greatest single call made rut, you'll miss a lot of opportunities.

I do have a couple of guidelines that I follow. If I'm using a mouth call as a locater I always go for the clear crisp call first. They are louder and they carry farther than the raspier calls, you can also blow them much harder.

I spend a lot of time calling hens. You get an old boss hen irritated and calling back to you she will come in almost 100% of the time, guess who always follows? When calling hens the raspier the call the better. Have not had much luck with the clear calls and hens. A very raspy call blown in a very irritating fashion is the ticket on hens.
