RE: not sure what to plant
Corn needs an average soil temperature of about 50 degreesto germinate. Warmer is definately better than colder. If the average air temperature by you is now over 50 (average of day high, and night low) for nearly 1 week, then planting corn will work. I would suggest planting corn in blocks, since it wind pollinates. 8 rows will work, more is better. A strip around the edge may not pollinate well, so the ears may be light. Corn can get burnt by frost and still survive, but that isn't optimal. Soybeans can not tolerate any frost, and should be planted after all danger of frost has passed. Deer love corn and soybeans, they are more than happy to sit out the hunting season in standing corn fields here in the north. Every soybean plot I have ever planted was mowed off to about 4-6 inches in the late summer. I think you are right on to use RR corn and/or beans. Weed control is critical to your plot's success.
