RE: .338-06
Otis, if the shooting was out the landrover window, I could have used the power of a magnum rifle but the shooting was over shooting sticks and there' s very little way I could hit a bull in the ars at 300 yards over the sticks.
My point: things like the .300 RUM are worthless in those conditions. While hunting whitetails I usually have a tree to rest on....in RSA the trees are impossible to rest on......too many thorns....a .30-06 is a fine gun there....more would be wasted!!!
A .338-06 would be a perfect rifle for the 700 pound antelope I shot. 22" of barrel would be OK and I' m now making plans for a pre-64 action to be rebarreled to .338-06 for my return trip.
