I' ve been using Tru-oil for gun stocks. Use some 000 steel wool over the shaft then wipe some more on. When it dries, run the wool over it again and put on another coat if you' d like. The steel wool will nock off the bumps and junk caught in the finish, but won' t rough it up so much as to take the finish off. Then after a bit if the finish wears down a bit, hit it up with soem more wool and put a few more coats of finish on.
