I didn't have anyone to teach me, and when I called in the first one, I was amazed. Since then, I have killed many. Find an areawith turkeys (notice I did not say a lot of turkeys or the best county in your state) where you can cover a lot of ground. Get therebefore daylight. At daylight, owl hoot. One may or may not respond. Start hiking. One may gobble off the roost. Set up as close as the cover will allow and yelp. If he gobbles back, you have a shot. Yelp again. Stay put regardless if he gobbles again or not. He may come in silent if he has been called to before. Whenyou are absolutely conviced he is not coming (and I have stood up only tohavegobblers fly off that werewithin 30 yards), move. About 0900-1000, start yelping with the highest pitch slate you own. If you cut one this late, he's hot if he is not henned up. Continueuntillunchtime. After lunch, it's a gamble. I have struckgobblers as late as 1600 that came in, but it's not often. Also, the later in the season, the less likely you will encouner henned-up gobblers and other hunters. I have put in as much as 16 miles on foot before lunch. If someone drives up, slams the pickup door, and cuts nearby, desregard them and keep hunting. The turkeys are used to that and it doesn'taffect them.
