in indiana you have to get a road kill permit from the police to make it legal
Same in IL. Have to call the police. They give you a tag. Take home a deer. All I know is if I hit a deer ever or my dad if it get killed it is coming home.

I would love to get a fresh road kill. I want to get a deer to practice my first butchering on. I just do not want to screw up something that I have shot.

Huh? Not true. In Illinois, you do not need a tag for a roadkill. You can hit and keep as many as you want. And if you don't want it, any resident may take it. You DO need a tag if you're gonna get it mounted or hide tanned.
He iscorrect. It is good though to get the Police officers name and phone number who did the accident reportfor the drive home. If for some reason you get pulled over and have a Deer without a tag, a simple phone call will clear it all up. When I used to get them the cop would always gove mehis card and if there were any problems just give him a call. Plus, a call to offer some meat a few days later will ensure calls for future roadkill!

Best deer hit are the ones that are hit in the neck or run into cars. Broken neck usually equals less meat spoiled!

B4NK is right, you'll know as soon as you skin it out what is bad. The bad part will look like the area looks like around a entrance wound of a bullet hole.
