RE: P&Y Scoring...WHY is it the way it is?
Ive got mixed feelings about the books anyway.....
Likely hood of a P&Y buck, and better yet, a Booner in my neck of the woods, Catawba and Lincoln County, NC are slim to none. Ive seen a precious few P&Y Bucks, around, at night and occasionally on a power plant's land, but never while hunting, scouting, and maybe the possibility, one in a poor trail cam photo.
I think a lot of newbies are getting disapointed with deer that they would consider a trophy, only to have the excitement taken away because he didnt meet P&Y NET minimums.
I also, however, think that it creats a staggered platform from a management standpoint. I.E. "We're starting to see several P&Y bucks on our property, and a possible Booner, letting the 110-120" bucks walk is really working"
I think as far as bow hunting is concerned, in the midwest and some eastern areas(online observations from other posters only), I think it sets a bar or goal. Same with Booners. There is an elderly man sitting on one of our boards at work who goes to the midwest/canada every year and will not take anything less than a Boone and Crockett deer, with one going over 200. I think itwould easier to hold out for a bigger deer when you are trying to reach a minimum to be in an 'elite' club, than just picking a random score to hold out for....atleast until you have achieved said minimum score once or twice. Idk...im rambling about my stupid opinion at which I have no experience in lol. My biggest deer was 110 at 4.5y/o....Not sure, if in his habitat, he would have reached P&Y if he had lived anyway. It was a gun kill anyway lol.
