Default RE: Wisconsin Herd Article

DNR wardens reported hunters were frustrated by the lack of deer. Hunters told them they thought wolves and bears were killing too many deer, too many hunters were baiting and the DNR inflated the deer population to sell licenses.

They of course denied all of this. But its the truth. The DNR pulled a fast one on the Wisconsin hunters.

deer kills were down in every region of the state except the south-central portion, which saw a 3 percent increase. The largest drop came in northern Wisconsin, where hunters took 30 percent fewer deer than last year.

According to the registration stations in my area that number was closer to 50% . The DNR of course denies all of this. For years we kept telling them at meetings to stop the doe kill permits. Since the meeting are meant to reflect the concerns of the localpopulation in relation to the deer herds.. they increased them, even forced them down our throats.

"I think the overall population is declining," Warnke said.
Where did they find this genius? More hunters in the woods, 30% fewer deer, I bet they pay him the big bucks... I bet he's got a college education.

But the wardens also reported different hunting patterns this year, with fewer hunters in the woods for long periods of time. They said they observed fewer deer drives and a drop-off in hunting interest after opening weekend.

Wisconsin has strict Trespass laws. You make a drive and come to someone else's property, you have a choice. Keep going and break the law, or stop the drive. I bet the DNR was seeing less drives. They were all over looking for violations.

Hunters in my area left the woods because they walked the snow fields and never saw fresh tracks. Myself included. I walked my woods and checked trails and snow. No tracks mean no deer. That would indicate that if you have no other place to hunt, you go home.

The hunters around here are really upset. Even upset is not a strong enough word... They are talking a boycott of hunting for a few years and force the deer herd to increase. I talked to a lot of friends up here and 90% are not buying license next year. I hope the rest of the state does that, and then when their license sales drop to little or nothing and the DNR has to lay off to make budget cuts, they can understand that Wisconsin hunters like our deer herds. And the insurance companies can go to...

thanks for the link.
