You could try Picasa but there's something wrong with your system and not with Photobucket.

What firewall are you using (Windows, Norton, MacAfee...)? There are issues when you run Norton over the top of the Windows firewall but I've never experienced them shutting down the machine, that sounds like something viral. Update your virus scan settings and run it to see if you're infected with something.
