I ranged him at 38yds, and put my 40pin on his heart, and stuck him to the ground. I really thought about not shooting him, but he just didn't look like he was gonna get out of the woods.

I think the meat should be ok, except for about 1/3 of a backstrap the BH destroyed on the entry. But when you're 45' or so above something shooting 38yds, something's gotta give picking that spot.
I'm not saying anything negative here but this picture doesn't look like you were 45 feet in the tree. And even if you were, why were you? Good Lord!!! I have to ask too... If you were aiming for the heart but managed to destroy part of the backstrap, where did you actually hit him internally then?

Hoyt,
I was about ~ 33' up in the tree, RF said "11 - 11.5 yds" when ranging the ground straight down., the deer was in that little creek bed which is about 15' deep in comparison to the little ridge my stand was on. The deer was quarter-to and from above a pretty good angle, arrow probably hit his body at a 35-40* angle or so just between blade and spine on entry, out just in front of the diaphragm on 2nd to last rib, and the shot hit through backstrap, spine, and lung and aorta.(Just quickly figuring the numbers, it was probably about 35yds"horizontal distance," which is part of why I hit higher than I might have liked)In all honesty, I didn't realize I was that high, until I ranged the ground, just wondering. I just got up to where it felt comfortable and I would be out of the "line of sight" of anything coming through that area.

And Hoyt, I don't think you were being a "prick" at all, but the reason I posed the "question" in such a way is because I DO KNOW guys who WOULDN'T do what I did, even if it had been an EASY clear shot at 20yds.

Good to see you were all over the trimming of shooting lanes, OH..J/K
There are plenty of lanes there, too much trimming leaves you out in the open. Most of my good lanes aren't in that direction, I had several good lanes to shoot out of most of the way around the tree.
