The fact you mentioned recurves and longbows furtherconvinces me you're not talking about the shoulder blade.
I have shot deer throught the shoulder, BUT, you have to have enough KE to do it.
I used to shoot wheels and slick tricks, now I shoot a recurve and 600gr arrows with wensel woodsmans.
I'll shoot slick tricks if I ever go back to wheels.
