Hi bigcountry ,
corrosion resistance is the primary reason for chroming a barrel or receiver . Wear reduction and reduced fouling are an added plus , but probably weren' t figured on when gun makers first started doing it . In those days the chroming process wasn' t as good as it is today , and the chrome tended to flake away after awhile . This doesn' t mean that you can slack up on cleaning .
