the d40 will work just find if you set it up like trail camera's were designed to be set up. point it down the trail, not straight across the trail. no camera on the market will catch a deer if you set it up straight across the trail. the pictures you see some people have that the camera is straight across the trail and the deer is in the center of the pic, is because that is probably the second deer that walked by. if you are on a tight budget, buy the d40 and aim it down a trail and you will be fine.
