RE: Public Land Elk or Pronghorn Hunting in New Mexico?
Have you tried going to the NM F&G web site and looking at the draw process? I'll send you the link shortly. I'll try to get some info from some of the guys I work with about where to go elk hunting. Pronghorn shouldn't be too much of a problem, the best way to go about that is to contact a private rancher and see what they have. I was looking at a ranch just southeast of Portales that was offering female tags for $300 archery or gun depending on when you want to hunt. I was given a map of 2 areas for elk by a guy that used to guide in NM, AZ, CO, TX and OK but I haven't even had a chance to hunt them yet. Hell I can't even put in for anyhunts, i'm either deployed when it's time to apply or i'm deployed during hunting seasons.....i'll see what I can find out for you though. Are there a lot of hogs around Lubbock? I haven't heard anybody talking about that area. I have permission to hunt an area just south of Melrose but haven't seen jack out there yet...not even a track. I've also been told the best way to hunt the hogs around this area is to use dogs....but nobody is willing to run them for a hunter, only for themselves. Sucks because i'm getting ready to go over to Iraq for a year and really want to do some kind of hunting before I go....I guess i'll go fling some arrows at prairie dogs and jack rabbits...HA! let me go find the web site for you.
