A .223 will kill as well as anything else if you hit the deer properly. Maybe even better than a larger gun since your wife will probably tolerate shooting and practicing more with it than she would with a hard hitting round. Ammo is cheap, so that is a bonus too. Just stay away from the fmj loads for hunting.
