most of my hunting will be no more than 100 yards. got rid of the 30-06 and now have a Savage 7mm Rem Mag with 150 gn core-lokts.
The 7 mag will have less penetration than the 30-06, especially under 100 yds.
I think I will actually have more than enough penetration. Enough to come out the other side with him flinching a muscle. I am going this weekend to scout out a area in the mountains. If i find a good area that has open space, I will use the 7 Mag. If I find something thats more enclosed, I will probably use the .270 or the ultra slug
