If I had let my deer lay and came back in the afternoon to track, who's to say that it be dead? It was still alive after me pushing it for 5 hours. If it can live through that it would certainly live through 5 hours of laying down.
Actually when you keep them keyed up like that, the body excretes adrenalin/epinephrine, which constricts blood vessels, helping in stopping bleeding especially in small vessels. Trust me if she bedded down, she'd have very likely died where she bedded. Pushing her like you did, you got her, but it was really unnecessary. As I said, if you shoot one in the rump, then you DO want to push it, because you're keeping the blood flowing into that that area which is keeping the animal bleeding, and you often times don't have to push them long before they bleed out. An animal, human, deer, dog whatever as a mammal usually shunts blood away from it's gut FIRST when the "Fight or flight" response kicks in. The deer would have probably died in less than 5 hrs. had you left it be, because pushing it slows down it's bleed out process in the gut due to that shunting the body does. Re-Read the "Sticky" at the top on tracking deer, it's got GREAT info in it.
