Well for me it seems that a slightly more aggressive rattle, but not an all out fight and a little lite grunting would work. if you know there are deer in the general area. If you can set up on a feeding area or watering hole. I usually only call if I see deer at a distance. If you can't set up on these types of locations then the above calling rattling my help.
