Sounds like a hog-nosed snake. They have a color pattern similar to a rattler and will flatten their head and hiss, if further provoked they will turn belly up and ooze out some slime that stinks like rotting flesh. Non-poisonous. I remember finding a few of them in wood piles and stuff as a kid.
Hognose would be my guess........funny little snake that will also play dead and let out a rotting stink..
