Hunting over this past weekend and seeing so many 1.5 yo bucks (41% of sightings) and reflecting to prior years where the results are basically the same, it got me to wondering about all the areas around the country that are overrun and overpopulated with deer but yet the guys come on here and talk about not seeing hardly any bucks of any age throughout the season.

I can understand in heavily hunted areas and a more liberal buck tag qoutawhere a lot of these 1.5 yo get shot early in the season.

However, and here is the question to you guys that have ungodly number of deer per square mile and need to kill a lot of doe. Assuming that 50% of a fawn crop is male and assuming that most button bucks are passed on as fawns, why is it that you don't see a large number of 1.5yo bucks, at least at the beginning of your seasons?

They were after all, part of last year's high number of anterless deer per square mile. It is my understanding that even in areas where poor nutrition exists, that you'll still get around 100% fawn crop (as opposed to areas that are more balanced which will run around 150% fawn crop).


I know some will say that their mothers force them to move to another area (mother nature's way to minimize inbreeding) but it would seem to me that with the great number of doe that these areas have, that one area would be "robbing Peter to pay Paul", so to speak in regard to the redistribution of 1.5 yo bucks throughout the area.

Not doubting you guys that say you see very few bucks of any age even though you are overrun with doe, but wondering why you think this is?
