RE: Going to buy a new 22 rifle....
My ruger 10/22 is my favorite fun gun.
The trigger was a bit stiff out of the box, but after tossing a gunsmith $50 to have the hammer and sear polished and an over-travel adjustment screw added, it was smoother than a baby's but, just not as messy.
It's so smooth now that it's not even a challenge to keep 10 rapid-fire shots on a bussiness card at 75 feet. That ought to fix your squirrel's wagon!
For a little more money than I spent, you can get a whole new target-grade trigger group from manufacturers like Volquartzen.
I alternate the optics I use on it. I have a 3X9 Simmons variable that is adequate for medium distance shooting, and a Tasco ProPoint 5 that SO cool for plinking and short-range hunting.
The Ruger 10/22, like others have said, has an amazing array of after market parts to choose from. I like the pistol grip stock, and the Bull barrel even though I own neither.
Good luck.
Keep 'em all in the Bull.
