My LaCross boots smelled like rubber too. I'd step in every pile of horse crap on my way to the stand, but to tell the truth, I don't think deer spook from the smell of rubber. That being said, my muck boots lost their new boot smell pretty quickly and they are the most comfortable boots I've ever worn.
