The key is knowing your firearms capabilities which as BT and Paul point the way by practicing on the range and a readiness afield to take that shot!!
just so you all know, i do sight it in, ALWAYS , i did it with #4 shot @20, 30 , 40 yds., then again with #5 shot.......i was just too worried about wounding the big ol bird....foolish me, next time i will remember what my gun is capable of
