As for using inside the timber, I have and it seemed like it worked pretty good without spooking any deer. I usually face it away from me on my down wind side (behind me) so if a deer is coming in from up wind, it won't have a mean old buck staring it in it's face. Then it will try to circle around to scent check. By doing this the deer would have to go to your left or right hopefully giving you a shot.
