I use something with an edge.....but not a particularly "sharp" edge. When I get it to a certain point....I just use a fingernail (and I don't have much in that respect).

As far as something to treat the shaft (and remove any old adhesive residue).....I use acetone.

To my knowledge....I don't compromise ths shaft's integrity with this method. I would assume that your shop would charge you for this service (removing the old vanes). Mine would. It's actually not hard to do, at all, also.
