Well I stand corrected, I always thought there was a larger difference between the two, but after looking them up the -06 only gives you about 100 or so extra fps for the same weight bullet.
My own preference for the 308win is due to the fact that it can be chambered in a short action,and it does produce less recoil than the 30-06 if a person is at all recoil sensitive.
