How to determine which bullet to use???

Is there any way to tell which bullet would be better than another
without buying them all and shooting?
Like with my black powder cartridge rifles I go by twist rate,like
1 in 19 twist I use a longer bullet....So my Lyman Mustang rifle
has a 1 in 28 I believe....I found a site that has several different
bullets,sabots,lead,round balls,etc...
