I bought my grandsons a 870 20 guage a few years ago and they are nice, proven shotguns. They use it for sporting clays mainly, but with a slug barrel it should be a potent deer gun. Unless he is a bigger than average boy I would start him off with the 20. They use a .243 on deer.
